Our September monthly meeting was Wednesday, September 21, at 6:30 at Bill Jackson’s in Pinellas Park. We talked about last weekend’s trip to the Rainbow River and upcoming trips and events. We have kayaking, bicycling, hiking and trap/skeet shooting adventures ahead.
Our speaker was Shirley T., one of our members who also is a volunteer in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. She talked to us about pollution in the ocean and then showed us a movie about a pygmy sperm whale that was rescued. She was ill. Inside her stomach they found plastic bags, parts of a mylar balloon and other plastic trash that had been discarded in the ocean. After going through rehabilitation, she recovered. She was released off the coast of Florida in the Atlantic Ocean. While it was great to have helped her out, it was sad that while out on the ocean monitoring her after the release, they saw plastic trash floating such as a plastic fork. That is a reminder to us all to make sure we deposit trash in the proper receptacle.
