We were excited to have Tampa Bay Times reporter Ben Montgomery as our speaker this month. Ben’s book, Grandma Gatewood’s Walk: The Inspiring Story of the Woman Who Saved the Appalachian Trail, was published last year. Grandma Gatewood was the first woman to hike the entire Appalachian Trail alone. Ben was given unprecedented access to her diaries, trail journals and correspondence and also interviewed surviving family members and those she met along her hike. We held a longer than normal business meeting to discuss past and upcoming trips. Then Ben shared with us his adventure of writing about Grandma Gatewood. It was interesting to hear about her experiences and some of the material he acquired to write the book. Thanks very much Ben!
