We had a group of 10 signed up for the Weeki Wachee trip on Wednesday but by the time we got there, we had four. Illness and busy schedules prevented the others from attending.
We headed out under a cloudy sky but for most of us the outside temperature was warm enough that we felt comfortable wading in the water about half-way down. It was a beautiful day on the river. Despite being told the all kayaks were reserved from Paddling Adventures at the Weeki Wachee State Park, the river was not very crowded. Quite a peaceful trip. We saw lots of fish and turtles. I think we saw more turtles swimming under water than we did sitting on logs.
We were excited to see one manatee on the second half of the river. It turned around and swam next to Christy for a little bit. I guess he/she liked her boat.
Towards the end of the river, the sun came out. It was nice to see it but I’m glad we didn’t have lots of sun earlier as it might have made for a warmer trip.
After taking the shuttle back to the state park, one of us headed back home and three of us headed to Becky Jacks for lunch. Two of us enjoyed cheeseburgers and the other had fish. Then we decided to explore the area a little bit, driving around Pine Island and Bayport Park, located on the Gulf of Mexico. Lots of people there enjoying spring break.
Then we headed home, a little tired from an early start to the day but it was well worth hitting the road early for a great day on the river.
